What is the Difference Between a Nutrition And Dietetic Consultation?

A nutrition consultation focuses broadly on improving overall dietary habits to support general health, wellness, or specific health goals. It typically involves assessing an individual's current eating patterns, lifestyle, and nutritional needs, and providing tailored advice to optimize nutrient intake. Nutritionists may work with people seeking to enhance fitness, lose weight, or improve energy levels.

A dietetic consultation, on the other hand, is more specialized and medically focused. Conducted by a registered dietitian or clinical dietitian, it addresses specific medical conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, gastrointestinal disorders, or food allergies. Dietitians provide evidence-based, therapeutic dietary interventions that align with medical treatment plans, often working alongside healthcare teams.

What is Involved in a Holistic Health, SBS Dietary Consultation?

Our experts work to provide you with a holistic package to your healthcare, ensuring that the goals set to improve your health, and achieve the results you are here for, are sustainable and obtainable. This is done using the dietetic assessment which involves working through the A-F structure. It encompasses six key components:

A: Anthropometry

This involves measuring physical parameters such as height, weight, Body Mass Index (BMI), waist circumference, and body composition. Weight history and changes over time, including unintentional weight loss or gain, are critical for identifying malnutrition, obesity, or other health risks. For athletes looking to work with Holistic Health, SBS we will take more specific anthropometry measurements to ensure the intervention is right for you.

B: Biochemistry

Biochemical markers, such as blood glucose, lipid profiles, albumin, haemoglobin, and vitamin or mineral levels, provide insights into a patient’s metabolic state, nutrient deficiencies, or disease progression. This data, which would be obtained from your GP, is crucial for monitoring chronic conditions like diabetes or kidney disease and evaluating the effectiveness of our dietary interventions.

C: Clinical Assessment

The clinical aspect evaluates the patient’s medical history, current conditions, and symptoms. Factors such as gastrointestinal issues (e.g., diarrhoea, constipation, or nausea), chronic diseases, or recent surgeries are reviewed. This step helps our healthcare professionals identify conditions that affect nutrient absorption, metabolism, or intake

D: Dietary Intake

A detailed review of the patient’s food and fluid intake is conducted. We can use methods such as: 24-hour dietary recall, food frequency questionnaires, or food diaries to help assess caloric intake, macronutrient balance, and micronutrient adequacy. Special attention is given to eating habits, preferences, cultural influences, and potential barriers like appetite loss or financial constraints so that our advice is bespoke to you.

E: Environmental/Functional Factors

This step considers external and functional factors that impact dietary intake and nutritional status. It includes socioeconomic conditions, access to food, and cooking facilities. Functional assessments evaluate the patient’s ability to chew, swallow, and perform activities of daily living, as these can affect nutrition. We also review your relationship with food and how your lifestyle impacts your health to ensure that our interventions will be appropriate, achievable, and sustainable.

F: Future Considerations/Follow-Up

This component focuses on setting realistic, individualized goals and planning follow-ups. Progress is monitored through regular reassessment of the A-F factors, ensuring adjustments are made as needed to optimize outcomes. Education, motivational support, and collaboration with healthcare teams are integral to sustaining improvements.
